Former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson is facing a $1.5 million lawsuit filed by a Cyprus-based company, according to the latest court filing.
Mediar, promoter of betting company Rabona, has filed a lawsuit in the London Supreme Court against Tyson and his company Tyrannic. The lawsuit alleges that Tyson wrongfully terminated a promotional commitment he signed in January due to a feud with social media influencer Jake Paul.
As the Associated Press reports, the lawsuit states, “The real reason for Mr. Tyson and Tyrannic’s hasty and unlawful termination was that Mr. Tyson agreed to a deal sponsored by Netflix to fight influential Jake Paul. “
Medair is demanding a refund of more than $800,000 in fees paid to Tyson “in return for no services provided” and an alternative $729,000 for “wasted production and promotional costs.”
The lawsuit comes in the wake of Tyson’s latest fight with Paul, who parked the final moment in front of 70,000 fans at AT&T Stadium, home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys. The fight was streamed on Netflix and reportedly earned Tyson $20 million.
Tyson, 58, who had not fought a sanctioned professional fight since 2005, lost to Paul, 27, in an eight-round unanimous decision.
Tyson’s criminal team argues that Medair breached that commitment by failing to obtain Tyson’s favor for promotional material.
Tyson, who was the undisputed heavyweight champion from 1987 to 1990, has faced various controversies and criminally challenging situations during his tenure, including new criminal controversies.
The fight with Paul, which was financially profitable throughout the month, received mixed opinions from boxing fanatics and concerned critics. YouTuber turned boxer Paul has been steadily building his boxing career, but he has mainly faced retired athletes and non-boxers.
He said the fight would be for memory books.
Paul said, “There may never be another moment like this in boxing, but I believe we can find something.” “And I think there are some names out there that make sense, that the programs will be that big.”
His fight with Tyson was the first live sports contest on Netflix. The streaming giant reported that at one point the battle was considered to be in 60 million households.
Despite poor efficiency, Tyson praised Paul’s skills. Tyson said, “He’s a very good fighter,” then the judges scored the fight 80 to 72 on one scorecard and 79 to 73 on the other two scorecards.
