“Squid Game” lovers know that the trumpet wakeup call makes anyone come close to dying. Our hero is not Gi-hun, but several gamers hoping to win fortunes by competing in childish, but deadly games. It is at once a mystery and a critique of inequality and greed.
Netflix
Season 1 used to be a global blockbuster. With 330 million views, it is Netflix’s most watched sequence to date. It received Emmy Awards for its lead actor, Lee Jung-jae, and writer Hwang Dong-hyuk. Each made history as the first Asian winners in their divisions.
We first spoke to Hwang in Korea as he was about to embark on an international promotional tour for Season 2.
“So, you’re in a good position now?” I requested.
“I don’t know what you mean by ‘sweet spot,'” Hwang responded.
“Just that things are going your way?”
“But it’s not easy. Nothing is easy,” he said. “People keep telling me, ‘You’re the happiest person in Korea.’ But in my mind, I am not that happy, I am struggling every day and night.”
This is due to the heavy workload: Hwang directed and wrote every episode. Sworn to secrecy, “Sunday Morning” was invited to a soundstage outside Seoul where most of Season 2 was shot.

Hwang was at the top of his game, but that was not always the case. He was only five years old when his father died. Further he says, his people remained stuck in poverty. As a struggling filmmaker and deeply in debt, Hwang said he wanted to retire into comic books. “I read a lot in the survival game genre and the gambling genre,” he said. “And that led me to think, what if I combined a childhood game with people putting their lives on the line for a big cash prize? And that’s actually how the idea was conceived. “
And a blockbuster was born.
Within the show, contestants met the prospect of desperation for money, exploited by a poor game sense, the Strong Front Guy.
When asked if “Squid Game” reflects how he views capitalists and capitalism in general – a group of mobsters driven through a ruthless and wealthy elite – Hwang responded, “I think so. Basically what is driving this system is human selfishness and greed. I am becoming more pessimistic about human nature these days. such a society Allows them to create whatever they feel most comfortable in.”
Most of the characters in Season 2 are ancient (Hwang killed many of them in Season 1), but the guards are back, and so is Gi-hun, now on a destructive challenge to leave the game.

Hwang said that “Squid Game” seasons two and three “will show people the bottom part of this world, the bottom part of human beings.”
So, will it get even darker? “Yeah, it’s getting darker, episode by episode,” Hwang said.
The spectacle is so popular that a crowd of 50,000 recently applied for the chance to take part in a real-life (albeit non-fatal) squid sport in Paris. Reward: An early look at the Ancient Season.
Hwang is surprised, especially by the wild success of his show in the US, where audiences historically do not watch subtitled TV series for long periods of time: “I was always expecting to make something very popular in the States, so I was surprised. ,” he said. “At that very moment, it was like my dream came true. But that level of success was beyond my expectations.”
Ironically, this author of a dystopian parable about desperation and poverty now exposes himself as a rich man – perhaps capitalism’s most laudable conqueror. Has this changed him? “Not much,” he said. “My life definitely got better because I don’t have to worry about making money anymore. But since then, I don’t think more success or more money has changed me much, because it’s just a It’s a number…it means nothing to me.”
What does What do his paintings mean? However, good fortune and the “Squid Game” campaign have taken a toll: “It’s been more than five years, like, that I’ve been working day and night on this same project. I’m so tired. I’m so Troubled, you know?” He laughed. “I need a break, I need a break.”
A break from the constant paintings…and his deep dives into the murky depths of human nature.
So, what makes Hwang Dong-hyuk laugh? “My friends! I love talking to my friends and drinking beer.”
