Dozens of people die from Thriller flu-like disease in Congo, government is “on general alert” as cases are investigated

Kinshasa, Congo – Congo’s state minister said Thursday that the country’s government is on alert over a mysterious flu-like illness that has killed dozens of people in recent weeks, most of them children. State Minister Roger Kamba said the government has so far confirmed 71 deaths, including 27 community deaths that occurred in hospitals and 44 deaths in southern Kwango province.

“The Congolese government is on general alert regarding this disease,” Kamba said, without giving additional details.

Kamba said that of the patients admitted to the hospital, 10 died due to lack of blood transfusion and 17 due to breathing problems.

The government has said that the symptoms of this disease come with fever, headache, cough and anemia. The state minister said epidemiology experts are deployed to collect samples and investigate the disease.
